21.03.2012 Round table "Intercultural city: building an inclusive identity" Strasbourg, France
On March 21st, 2012 Deputy Head of the Izhevsk City Administration on social policy Irina Tesleva took part in the Round table “Intercultural city: building an inclusive identity” that was organized within the frames of the 22nd session of the Chamber of Local Authorities of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Strasbourg (France).
Work during the Round table was concentrated at revealing optimal model of dealing with cultural diversity in local communities and building relations between various ethnic and cultural groups. The discussion was based on experiences collected while Intercultural cities programme implementation.
During her speech Irina Tesleva shared rich experience gained by the city of Izhevsk as a participant of the programme; revealed principal tasks that were set during the Pilot phase; mentioned the brightest examples of ways how that tasks were solved; noted the results that were achieved and goals that were still relevant.
Irina Mikhailovna gave a special emphasis to the fact that equal and comfortable living conditions for representatives of all nationalities and religions are created in the capital of the Udmurt Republic. She successfully proved that through city practice examples. According to the words of Mr. Robert Palmer, the Director of the Directorate of Democratic Governance, Culture and Diversity of the Council of Europe, “given statements made a convincing case for the value of diversity and the intercultural approach to urban integration, and will certainly have inspired many people in the audience. Izhevsk is showing a strong awareness of the potential for diversity in terms of city growth and development, and awareness that intercultural policies are necessary in order to fulfill this potential”.
The Round table organizers and the Intercultural cities programme coordinators expressed sincere hope for future fruitful cooperation with Izhevsk city authorities within the programme framework.
