Izhevsk - the capital of the Udmurt Republic

 

Izhevsk is the capital of the Udmurt Republic. It is situated in the eastern part of the East-European plain in the European part of Russia between rivers the Volga and the Ural, in interfluves of rivers the Kama and the Vyatka on unnavigable river Izh.

Izhevsk was founded in 1760 as the workers’ settlement at the ironworks, and then it grew into a major industrial, cultural, scientific centre of the Udmurt Republic.

The population of Izhevsk is 610 633 thousand of citizens (as of January 1st, 2010). Representatives of more than 130 nationalities live in the city.

Izhevsk total area is 31 515 hectares and the city is reckoned among 10 biggest ones of the Volga Federal District. Geographically Izhevsk is situated not very far from Moscow and major industrial centers of Volga and Ural regions. Distance between Izhevsk and Moscow is 1129 km.
