Finnish-Russian project "From the isolation to the society"

Since April, 2005 till December, 2006 Izhevsk was taking part in the process of realization of the Russian-Finnish project “From the isolation to the society: rehabilitation and leading into the active life of people with mental disabilities”. That project was the part of IBPP program of the European Commission. The applicant of this project was Finnish Association of rendering support to people with disabilities. Department for social care of population of the Administration of the city of Izhevsk became a partner of the project.
As the main aims of this project the following can be mentioned: development of the opportunities of local authorities and non-governmental organizations in allowing young people with mental disabilities to be included into the society, on the one hand, and development of the abilities and potential of young people with mental disorders to be integrated into the society, on the other hand.

The results of the actions that were undertaken within the frames of this program can be appreciated positively. For the first time such special services as, for example, video studio for both young people with mental disorders and health teenagers where they can create movies together were organized. Besides that, establishment of interactive web site “Spark” (http://www.kipina.ru/spark.php) for people with mental disabilities became another result of the project realization. “Spark” started its functioning on 1st of April, 2007. Here young people can communicate, share their life impressions and publish their stories and specialists and parents are highly welcome to get any information concerning projects and programs of this type.

Speaking about the results of the project in the Udmurt Republic it is appropriate to mark that on the base of Integrated center № 1 of social service of population of Pervomaisky district (Izhevsk) the club “Partner” was established in summer, 2005. Young boys and girls with mental disabilities, their parents, the leaders and specialists of the creative areas became its members. Specialists and student volunteers of the Faculty of Psychology and Teacher Training Faculty of the Udmurt State University have been carrying out classes on arttherapy, actor act, intellectual and physical development with young people. Members of the club either study together or spend their free time visiting museums and the Circus. They also participated in republican festival “Special Art”, in the exhibition “Get well!” and in the computer graphics competition. In June, 2006 children and their parents visited Finland and got acquainted with the functioning of institutions of social service in Helsinki.
