Izhevsk public transportation

Until the beginning of the XXth century there was practically no public transportation in Izhevsk, but steamship communication across the pond.

The autobus became the first type of public transport in the town, the tram appeared after it, and lately the trolleybus offered its service to the citizens of Izhevsk.

Nowadays, Izhevsk has a highly developed system of public transportation. Electric transport holds the first position when the total volume of public transportation is concerned: 52% of passengers use this type of transport (23% prefer trams and 29% - trolleybuses). The bus is also very popular among people. 48% of passengers frequently use its service. Moreover, 150 000 passengers per year enjoy benefits of water transportation.

Speaking about the total statistics, more that 250 million of people a year and about 700 thousand passengers a day are transported by all types of municipal public transport.

Besides that, citizens and guests of Izhevsk have railway and airline transport at their disposal.

The main direction of the Izhevsk airline functioning is passenger transportation.

Izhevsk airport - the second class port – is one of the biggest in the Ural department of civil aviation.

Izhevsk airport’s equipment and services meet international and meteorological takeoff and landing requirements. The airport has a certification of the first meteorological minimum category assignment. All types of aircrafts can make a landing in the airport practically in any meteorological conditions. Therefore, Izhevsk airport also functions as an alternate airfield: in case when neighboring republic and regional ports are “closed” because of the weather conditions plains land in the capital of the Udmurt Republic. Izhevsk airport takes different types of plains including “Yak-42” and “TU-154”.

Until 1992 Izhevsk airlines had been transporting more than 400 passengers a year. Straight air lines connected Izhevsk with 42 cities of Russia and 14 regions of the Udmurt Republic. After the plane tickets’ prices increase all local airlines were closed and the number of distant flights halved.

Nowadays Izhevsk is connected with twenty cities by air service, without taking into account transit and charter flights.

Since 1981 regular flights to Moscow are carried out. The time of this flight is one hour and twenty minutes.

Lately, as the need of flights to foreign countries appeared the construction of international airport section was begun.
